Having to move house in Perth? The task can be rather daunting especially if you’ve been living in the same house for some time. The amount of “stuff” that you may have collected can be huge. And the chances are that as you start packing up you will find “stuff” that you haven’t seen or used for many years.
So what can you do to make it easier. Well… here’s my top tips for moving house.
1. Be prepared to throw a lot of stuff away. It’s a great opportunity to declutter and it’s worth being “harsh”. If you haven’t used it or seen it for some time then either throw it away or have a garage sale. When moving house in Perth it’s no use packing it and then having to unpack it at the new house and finding somewhere to store it.
2. Be organized. Make sure you have everything you need to pack efficiently. You’ll need packing boxes of various sizes, box tape, marker pens to label your boxes and as per point 1 above… you may want a big dumping bin to throw out the rubbish. And if you’ve got kids, you’re going to have to get them organized as well. If you have a large house, it’s going to take you a few days to pack everything.
3. If you’re planning to use a moving company, book it in weeks ahead. Then, as the moving date gets closer, confirm your booking with the company again. They’ll usually provide you with the packing boxes that you’ll need. And remember, the more you pack yourself the less ther move is going to cost you. Removal companies charge by the hour and if you’ve packed things right it won’t take them long to come in and remove everything for you.
4. Be sure to redirect your mail and advise your utilities companies to get a final meter reading for the power, gas and water.
5. Visit the new house a few times, take measurements so that you can plan exactly where all the furniture is going. When the removal company deliver the furniture you can at least tell them whether items are upstairs or downstairs and it’ll save you some hard muscle work.
6. On the day of moving have someone to help. It’s going to be a lot easier and less stressful to have someone helping you. If you have children or Pets, you could also arrange for someone to care for those who cannot help with the moving.
7. When you arrive in your house and the removal men have gone, get ready to celebrate. You’ve still got a lot of unpacking and organizing to do but take a little time out to celebrate your new home.
8. Hopefully, you won’t have much cleaning to do before you unpack, but sometimes you will. The new home may not be as clean as you may like so if you have to get some help and get the job out of the way as soon as possible.
9. Give yourself enough time to unpack so that you can unpack properly rather than having to change where everything is a few weeks later.
10. Keep talking with your partner and/or family. Moving can be stressful for everyone. Talk to your children about how they feel and check any concerns that they have. They may need extra reassurance and time with you. Make the process as fun as you can and stay relaxed and in control.
Good luck with your house Move!
